Wild Vegetation Clearing: Back to Square One

A year on from our appeals to authorities to abstain from clearing wild vegetation along rural pathways, the Foundation has noted a recurring occurrence of vegetation being cut in certain areas once more. Wild flora plays a crucial role for pollinators, particularly as they begin to flower, and it serves as a shelter for small animals while also helping to prevent soil erosion, thus providing an essential ecological service and a picturesque view of our rural passages. Last year, instructions were issued by the Minister for the Environment advising against the removal of this vegetation before it dries. Nonetheless, we are observing the recurrence of similar actions this year. The Foundation stresses the importance of incorporating good management practices for rural wild vegetation into the Pollinators Strategy that the Environmental and Resources Authority is currently drafting.
